A slot is a specific place on the motherboard where an expansion card may be inserted. This slot is often used for memory cards, video graphics cards, or PCI cards. Some manufacturers design their slots to accommodate ISA, PCI, and AGP expansion cards. This type of slot can be found in both desktop and laptop computers. The term also refers to the location of a slot on a video game console.
The term slot can also refer to a position on the field or in a team. For example, a receiver who lines up closer to the center of the field than typical wideouts is referred to as a slot receiver. This type of player is normally fast and able to run slant, switch, or cross routes. Often, these types of routes require them to get past the linebackers a bit in order to gain a few yards. Because of this, they often play on obvious passing downs. In the NFL, a good slot receiver will typically be a smaller guy who is shifty and can make defenders miss. They are not usually asked to catch long touchdowns but instead will gain 8-15 yards a few times a game in order to move the chains and get first downs. These types of players also tend to be more reliable as they are a lot closer to the linebackers than the corners.
